      Te Mata
      Coleraine Cabernet Merlot

Coleraine is New Zealand’s most famous red wine. First produced in 1982, this classic blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc displays the concentration, complexity and elegance found in the world’s finest wines.

"Very deep, concentrated, bright purple/red colour. The bouquet is exquisite with a multitude of black fruits, blueberry, cassis, violet and cedar aromas, and much more besides. The detail is outstanding, as is the intensity of the palate. It’s very concentrated and powerful, firmly-structured and has tremendous persistence. The tannins are firm and abundant and will help guarantee a long life, but they are ripe and accessible and the wine is already approachable. (52% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 15% cabernet franc) 2023–2048." 98 points & 5 Stars, The Real Review

“I conjectured whether this is New Zealand’s greatest wine? Well, let me put it this way, it is the frontrunner… a complex, intellectual entity that rewards long term cellaring year after year. I would have no hesitation placing it within the class of Bordeaux Second Growths.” - Neal Martin

"Undeniably well-crafted and impeccably styled, the wine exhibits cassis, dark cherry, cedar, violet and subtle tobacco characters on the nose with a light seasoning of warm spice. The palate offers outstanding concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel, combined with fabulous fruit purity and elegant oak undertones, leading to an impressively prolonged finish backed by seamlessly integrated chalky tannins. At its best: 2026 to 2038." 98 Points & 5 Stars, Sam Kim - Wine Orbit

"Bright, youthful blended red of cabernet sauvignon (52%), merlot (33%) and cabernet franc (15%). This is classic Coleraine with cassis, cedar, floral, blueberry, a suggestion of wood-smoke, anise and spicy oak flavours. Terrific depth and an exquisite balance between fruit sweetness and acid/tannin structure. It will be a long-distance runner. Drink 2019 to 2028." 98 Points & 5 Stars, Bob Campbell MW - The Real Review

      Tom Syrah

Expressing rich and ripe layers of dark berries and cherry fruit, the Tom Syrah has lifted floral aromas with a touch of warm exotic spices and notes of cacao, vanilla, and a soft earthiness. Luxuriousness and elegance intertwine with plush silky tannins on the palate, leading to a long smooth finish.

Fruit sourced from our Redstone Vineyard on the Bridge Pa Triangle (82.5%) and Gimblett Vineyard (17.5%). Selective harvesting was employed to target only the lowest vigour soils, down to part rows where required. The fruit was then destemmed, lightly crushed, and fermented warm in a shallow profile, 70 year old concrete fermenters and an old French oak cuve. The caps were regularly broken and wetted to ensure a steady, gentle extraction. The resultant wine was filled to a selection of the finest French oak barrels (42% new) for 22 months subsequent maturation. The final wine has been very lightly egg white fined to soften the palate, and then bottled unfiltered. – Church Road

"From grapes grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle. Superbly elegant and fragrant Syrah with violet, cranberry, plum and a suggestion of mocha among the more prominent flavours. An elegant wine with a silken and ethereal texture. Should develop well but surprisingly approachable now." 96 Points, Bob Campbell - Real Review

"A complex and very appealing bouquet of Syrah with aromas of violets and red flowers, dark berries, an abundance oak wood aromas and pepper. Complex on the palate with mealy tannins, loads of acidity, flavours of dark berries, clove and a little chocolate. A youthful wine still with tension and concentration. The tannins become a little finer as the wine opens up glass (Zalto perfect for this wine). Lengthy finish, a wine that will age well through 2025. Store properly and this wine will reward. Crafted using concrete fermenters and an old Cuve, 33 days on skins, 42% New French Oak and 22 Months Barrel ageing." 95.5 Points, Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

      Tom Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

An amalgam of rich, ripe, dark fruit is overlaid with beguiling, lifted aromatics including violet, sandalwood and cedar with hints of dried woody herbs. In contrast to these lifted elements, subtle notes of cacao, vanilla and dried currant bring a luxuriousness to the aroma and flavour profile.

Structurally, the wine leads with beautiful fruit weight and richness across the mid palate, typical of good Hawke’s Bay Merlot. This is a multidimensional blend that simultaneously shows great depth of dark, brooding flavour whilst expressing a haunting array of gentle perfume - the ultimate expression of great Hawke’s Bay blends.

"The 2015 vintage is arguably one of the greatest reds ever crafted in New Zealand." - Michael Cooper

"A blend of two-thirds cabernet sauvignon and one-third merlot grown on the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle subregions. Fine-boned red with a silken, seamless texture and a very appealing dark berry, spice and subtle floral aroma. This is a truly powerful yet supremely elegant red with potential to become even more exciting with bottle age. Drink 2019 - 2027." 97 Points, Bob Campbell - Real Review

"This really is the foundation of Tom McDonald’s vision - a full-bodied Hawkes Bay red wine based on Cabernet. If he were with us today I’m sure he’d be very proud of the work winemaker Chris Scott has done. A bouquet of a very young wine still with dark berry fruits, spics and new leather. Violets and plums, dark spices and tobacco, bell-pepper and smoky wood. Dry on the palate with youthful, quite powerful tannins, matched with acidity and a core of fruit. Flavours of dark berries, sweet oak and violets, plenty of youthful tension and quite Bordeaux like. After 30 minutes in glass (Zalto perfect for this wine) the wine begins to show what it may be like in five years from now. A lovely example, very young, great potential. Best from 2022 through 2032." 95 Points, Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
